Property Tax
Who determines preferential assessments and tax exempt status?
The Board of Assessors determines eligibility and processes applications for property qualified for specialized assessments such as Conservation Use and Preferential Assessment (agricultural, historic, conservation, Brownfield, etc.) and tax exempt property (churches, non-profit hospitals, etc.). Tax exempt status must be approved by the Board of Assessors before tax liability can be removed.

Who determines property value?
The Board of Assessors’ appraisal staff determines property value based on recent sales and market conditions and issues a Notice of Current Assessment to all property owners each spring. If the fair market value of the property changes, the assessed value must also be changed. Visit the Augusta Tax Assessor’s website for more information.
How do I appeal a property tax assessment?
There are three methods of appeal:
- Board of Equalization method with further appeal to the Superior Court;
- Arbitration method with further appeal rights which requires the appealing party to submit a recent certified appraisal of the property within 45 days of filing the appeal
- Hearing Officer method for non-homestead real property with fair market value over $750,000 for appeals regarding value or uniformity with further appeal rights to Superior Court

When are property taxes due?
Note that billing and due dates may change year-to-year as required by the Richmond County Tax Commissioner, but the due date is November 15th of each billing year.

How do I apply for property tax exemptions?
Property owners may apply for exemptions online, by mail or in-person with the Tax Commissioner’s Office year-round. However, application must be made by April 1 to receive the exemption for that tax year.

How can I pay my property taxes?
Residents can pay property taxes by mail, in person, or online. – Mail payments to the Tax Commissioner’s Office at P.O. Box 1427, Augusta, GA 30903 – Pay in person during regular business hours at the Municipal Building only – Pay online by check, credit card or debit card. Visit the Search and Pay page
What if I can’t pay my taxes on time?
Taxes are delinquent if not paid by the due date, and penalties and interest are added based on the unpaid amount. Delinquent properties are also subject to tax liens, which are issued in the name of the owner as of January 1.

What are the taxes for bought or sold property?

How do I cancel my registration?
You may cancel your vehicle registration at any time; however, it is advised that you cancel your registration before you cancel your insurance policy. Ad valorem taxes must be current, and there must not be any outstanding insurance lapse or suspension fees. For more information, visit our Vehicle Registration page.
Get a duplicate registration?
To get a duplicate registration, the titled/registered owner of the vehicle can visit any Richmond County Tag Office and must bring their valid driver’s license. The charge for a duplicate registration is $1. Visit our Vehicle Registration page for information.
